Public Bicycle Sharing Project in Surat Faces Setback as 10% of Bicycles End Up in Scrap Condition Surat's Public Bicycle Sharing Project, initiated by the Surat Municipal Corporation in 2019, aimed to provide an eco-friendly mode of transportation to citizens. However, out of the 1,200 bicycles distributed across 125 stations, approximately 10% (120 bicycles) have fallen into a state of disrepair, causing concerns. Each bicycle, valued at around Rs 60,000, has ended up in the municipality's workshop due to inadequate monitoring and vandalism. Former Surat Municipal Corporation corporator, Dinesh Kachdia, shared a video of the damaged bicycles on social media, highlighting the need for accountability among officials responsible for their maintenance. Investigations are underway to determine why these valuable assets were allowed to deteriorate, potentially wasting public funds.
